Last weeks huge dumps of fresh snow combined with this weeks excellent weather has give a real Chamonix ski treat in the Mont Blanc Massif. The Vallee Blanche was in excellent condition today and a pleasure to ski from the Midi to the streets of Chamonix. Good all the way with some good fresh snow up high and lovely creamy grippy snow where it is well skied and fully tracked. The James Bond track descent to Chamonix is in very good condition for the moment and the only slightly rocky section was the very lower glacier. So, if you don’t like clipping your skis on a few rocks, take the train.
The descent from the station was straightforward in crampons with skis on packs and there is a beefy double rope in place down the ridge line with teams working on the Z. Skiers were doing most variations on the VB including the Petit & Grand Envers, Gros Rognon, classic, Vrai, Italian Combe Vierge and Combe Noire and there were also teams skinning up the Periades Glacier towards the Breche Puiseux. Conditions crossing the Salle a Manger were good and many teams had also skied the exit valley hard skiers left from the Requin Hut. Lower down on the Mer de Glace, a few teams had arrived from the Pas de Chèvre, but it looked messy!
Yesterday we had a good split Vallee Blanche warm up day with a morning at Le Tour and the team skiing around Brevent after a good lunch in the panoramic summit Restaurante. The snow was still very good over on the shady Vallorcine side of the Posettes and Tete de Balme and teams had taken some steep lines off l’Arolette, many of the Vormaine Couloirs etc.
Snow cover feels well above average for early February around the Mont Blanc Massif and, despite the warm weather today, this should even steadily improve with the showery weather forecast for the next week or so.
