The end of another week of near wall to wall sunshines comes to a stormy end today with heavy clouds building up in anticipation of heavy rain and electrical storms tonight. Our Eiger ascent team did some fine warm up routes in good swift style including the traverse of Les Perrons above Vallorcine (no crampons used) and the Dent du Geant from the Torino Hut (good dry conditions on the Dent but now pretty loose and dry on the approach).
The forecast early arrival of the storms in the Swiss Bernese Oberland sent our team further south to enjoy the better weather on the Monte Viso near Torino. Tim & Neil climbed this today via a solid 11 hour round trip including an ascent of the ‘spicy’ Saint Robert’s Tower on the East Ridge…
Other groups this week have climbed the Weissmeis, Aiguille d’Entreves & Cosmiques Arete, which all had good swift dry conditions on the rock with good snow volume facilitating a swift approach. Very good and fairly quiet conditions reported on the Hornli Ridge on the Matterhorn today with nice and dry up the ridge to crampons on at the shoulder and pleasant swift conditions in general.
As a change from high altitude mountaineering in the Mont Blanc Massif, and as part of a family Mont Blanc training programme, we combined a day of hill walking, rock climbing and via Ferrata with a great alpine hut style lunch at the Refuge de Varan with magnificent views across the Arve Vally to the Aravis, Beaufortain and Mont Blanc Massifs.
