The warm sunny weather continues in Chamonix and looks set to continue for a long time to come also! However the nights have remained chilly and the snow cold and fresh on shady aspects above about 1800m, so there is some great skiing to be had. Our Intro Ski Touring team found some good fresh tracks in the meadows around the Grands Montets before heading up towards the Col des Rachesses. Many teams were skinning over this and down to the Argentiere Glacier. With some teams carrying on up to the Col de Passon and skiing both Argentiere Glacier and Le Tour flanks by the look of it, see picture below:
The Montets has some good bumps forming and these will only get bigger and bigger, the black run down from near the Lognan refuge to join the Pierre a Ric was fine with the sun warmed bumps later in the afternoon although would be hard work when re-frozen! Tracks were also seen across the Chamonix Valley on the sunny side of the Col de Belvedere, Col de Dard and, bien sur, Col Crochues!
Teams skiing the Vallee Blanche reported good conditions although the lower glacier and lower track is a bit stony with more coming through by the day with the warm temperatures. Over in the Contamines Valley another team skinned up to the Col de la Fenetre from N.D. La Gorge and skied a fine steep couloir, in powder, lookers left of the Fenetre, when approaching from the Contamines side. Then the Col de Cicle and descent via the Roman Road. All fine but like other lower altitude things – getting a little icier by the day.
