New Ice Route at Sgurr na Feartaig, NW Highlands 3/3/2010

Blair Fyffe on the crux swing onto the icicle on his and Andy Turner's new route at Sgurr na Feartaig, 3/3/2010

Blair Fyffe and Andy Turner took advantage of the continuing big freeze across the Scottish Highlands with a well calculated foray into the North West and onto the Achnashellach crag of Sgurr na Feartaig. Perusing the inspiring SMC Northern Highlands Guide over yet another brew in Banff Crescent, Fort William, Fyffe spotted the thin Icicle, not marked with a red line on the crag photo topo. Sure enough, even at this relatively low lying (550m) crag, conditions were excellent and Turner soon dispatched the introductory pitch. Fyffe then worked hard for some reasonable rock runners before committing to the steep crux section involving some superb funkily featured ice and a wild swing out on to the front face of the icicle.

The third pitch was much more amenable and completed this fine 90m VI,7 ice route. As yet, unamed.....
