Chamonix Ski Mountaineering / Off-Piste

Andy and Muir starting the steep descent on the Col de Plan variation on the Vallee Blanche descent, Chamonix.

Chamonix is a mecca for ski mountaineering and it's extensive lift system enables some great high mountain tours to be done in a day trip from the valley. This is a week designed for those who have already done some ski touring and want to sample some of the longer, tougher days of ski mountaineering Chamonix has to offer aswell as enjoy some of the great off-piste to be had off the lifts. There are also some well situated Mountain Refuges to enable short hut to hut tours or multiple summits to be climbed.

Some potential Ski Mountaineering days from the Chamonix Valley:

  • Mont Buet (3096m) in the Aiguille Rouges
  • The 3 Cols Ski Tour from the Grande Montets lift
  • Col du Toir Noir
  • Col du Passon
  • Mont Mallet Glacier via the Breche Puiseaux
  • Traverse of the Col de la Buche, Aiguille de l'M

Some potential Off piste skiing itineraries from the Chamonix Valley:

  • Vallee Blanche descent & variations (Like the Col du Plan)
  • Pas de Chevre descent from the Grande Montets to the Mer de Glace
  • Les Couloirs Des Posettes from Le Tour to Vallorcine
  • Glacier de Toule from the Hellbronner lift system

Potential huts to visit to enable a multi day tour based from Chamonix:

  • Conscrits Hut - superb ski mountaineering on the Domes de Miage etc
  • Benevolo Hut - e.g. ascent of the impressive Punta Basei (3338m)
  • Grand St. Bernard Monastery - An excellent variety of summits and touring on both the Italian and Swiss sides of the Frontier

Fitness and skiing experience pre-requirements:

Good general fitness is required for this course particularly if you are keen to complete some of the longer tours like Mont Buet and the Breche Puiseaux (an ability to comfortably maintain an ascent rate of 300m/hr on skins for up to 5 hours). Effective off-piste skiing is also required. This means the ability to make linked short radius turns in a variety of off-piste snow conditions. Some ski touring experience is also required so if you don't have this check out our introduction to ski mountaineering course first (you could do it the week before!).
