Introduction to Chamonix

Enjoying the excellent rock climbing on the traverse of the Aiguille de l'Index, Chamonix.

Come and sample what the capital of world mountaineering has to offer....pretty much everything! This course is designed for complete beginners to mountaineering and would be ideally suitable for couples or families. In a weeks holiday in the Alps you could learn to rock climb, have a go at "Via-Ferrata", learn to use ice-axe and crampons on a glacier and have a go at ice climbing. You could also complete an alpine scramble high in the Aiguilles Rouges, spend a night in an alpine hut and climb to a snowy summit in the Mont Blanc Range

Possible venues and climbs include:

  • Mountaineering training (using ice axe and crampons) and ice climbing on one of Chamonix's large Glaciers.
  • Rock climbing training on one or more of the superb single and multi-pitch crags dotted throughout the Chamonix Valley
  • Try your hand at a "Via Ferrata down the lovely Arve Valley.
  • Petite Aiguille Verte (3512m). A short but steep alpine snow and ice climb from the top of the Grande Montets cable car.
  • Aiguille de l'Index. A superb rocky ridge traverse with scrambling, easyish rock climbing and a big abseil to descend.
  • Traverse of the Aiguille de Crochues. The classic ridge traverse in the Aiguille Rouges, the lower, rockier side of the Chamonix Valley
  • Tour Ronde. An excellent introductory alpine peak, usually climbed from the Torino Hut on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Range.

There are so many options in the Chamonix valley we can really tailor a week of mountaineering to suit your exact aspirations.

Suggested Experience: This is a tailor made course suitable for complete beginners to mountaineering. A good level of fitness is still required with days of mountaineering 5-7 hours long.
