Dom - North Flank
Climbers on the glacial North Flank of the Dom, Lenspitze on the left, Weissmeis and Lagginhorn beyond, Swiss Alps
The North Flank glacier route offers a quick descent from the summit of the Dom or an alternative line of ascent if the Festigrat is in poor condition. The climbing is technically straightforward and really amounts to a glacial walk (PD-). However there are a number of crevasses on the ascent and a section of the lower glacier, just above the Festijoch, is exposed to serac fall. Without either good visibility or a good track the route finding around the crevasses and slpoe steepenings would be difficult.
Overall, when combined with the long hut approach and particularly if a descent to the valley is made on the same day the Dom adds up to one of the most physically rewarding and atmospheric high mountain itineraries in the Alps.
