Scottish Ice Climbing Conditions Still Improving
Catrin seconds Andy (THE TURNERMA8TR) up Captain Hook (VI), Beinn Udlaidh, Scottish Highlands
The big freeze continues in the Scottish Highlands with freezing levels and snow lines close to sea level. With considerable or High avalanche hazards in the bigger hills Tom, James and I headed down South to enjoy some great ice climbing sport at Beinn Udlaidh.
We climbed 4 pitches of grade III & IV ice and did two full 60m abseils (one of them on to Di and partner - sorry Di, we were committed by the time we saw you, honest !) and some alpine ropework training. Conditions were very good and building since my visit last week.
Andy and Catrin climbed Captain Hook (?) and Peter Pan Direct, one team early on made short work of 'The Smirk'; James and clients climbed Green Eyes and South Gully of the Black Wall and various other lines around the corrie were getting climbed.
More photos from the days winter climbing.
