Foehn Snow Dumps Boost Alpine Ski Touring and Off-Piste Ski Conditions
British Guide Owen Samuels enjoying the powder time at Ovrennaz above the Rhone Valley, Swiss Alps
Last weeks stormy foehn winds deposited large dumps of snow across the Italian, Swiss and French Alps and gave some great conditions for those who picked out safe places to ski off-piste and tour. Up to 80cms of snow fell in the Valle d'Aosta and High Swiss Valais with a bit less in the more northerly and westerly Chamonix Valley.
However the great thing about a Chamonix based ski trip (apart from the 2 very high and fantastic lifts in the valley itself) is the rapid access to both the Valle d'Aosta via the Mont Blanc tunnel, and the Swiss Rhone Valley, via the Col de la Forclaz.
Over the last couple of days we have enjoyed superb off-piste and touring conditions in both the Italian and Swiss Alps via a short commute from Chamonix.
It has to be said that, for all its assets, the coffee generally doubles in quality and halves in price when you ski out of the Chamonix Valley!
