End of the 'Beau Temps' & Start of Winter in Chamonix...

Alpine Winter Climbing in the Argentiere Basin, Chamonix

The amazing autumn period of stable, dry sunny weather here in the Chamonix Valley is ending today. For the first time in over a month, the summit of Mont Blanc has disappeared behind gathering thick cloud and strong south westerly winds are whipping up even the old, dry snow surface. And, yes, wait for it....Yes, fresh snow is on the way! The much awaited 'Or Blanc' is forecast to arrive this evening and continue right through in to next week with a dropping isotherm that should see snow on the streets of Chamonix by next week. The snow will certainly be very welcome both to revitalise the currently very dry mountains and to kick start the alpine ski season.

The Beau Temps that have prevailed over much of the Alps since October have offered a real autumn bonus for alpine climbers and good quality ice, quiet mountains and cool stable weather gave decent conditions on the North Faces of The Matterhorn, Droites, Courtes and Grandes Jorasses.

Getting alpine winter routes done here in Chamonix will become a lot easier again after the 17th December by which time all the main ski lifts should be open. Argentiere's 'Grand Montets' station describe a 'partial opening' for the winter season on Saturday, 10th December, depending of snow conditions. Lets hope the inbound snow provides a lot of good winter sport all round.

Stay posted for more snow and climbing conditions reports throughout the 2011/12 winter season.

See you on the slopes, Rob
